Family and Consumer Sciences has a focus that directly places emphasis on the social, emotional and psychological needs of an individual during a time of grief, loss or life change.

During the transition of the life cycle our nutritional concerns, rest, basic human needs,  socialization and the bonds of friendship are necessary for the normal life process of healing during a time of stress.

The "Stages of Grief" occur  throughout each phase of family and individual  development.  Adjustments are transitional within each stage.  Length of time and intensity will vary as each stage evolves.  Coping with grief involves financial, social, emotional, and physical changes.  Individuals need support from family, friends, and professional resources to maintain a balance for a healthy outcome whether the "state of grief" is due to divorce, separation, death, relocation, failing a test, rejection, or loss of any kind.

Social graces and proper etiquette acceptable in the Southern culture include hospitality shown with comforting food selections, proper attire that would reflect dignity and respect for the occasion of a memorial or a funeral service.

The above links will give you a better understanding of the stages that occur throughout the grief process, help for the bereaved,  plus a few popular Southern foods common to our area for sharing our sympathy to those facing a loss.
